Mammography/ Preventive Screening Breast Cancer
In Austria, about 5,600 women develop breast cancer every year. About 1,600 die from the consequences of the disease. Preventive cancer screenings help to reduce mortality and increase the chances of recovery.
Mammography is a targeted X-ray examination of the breast. This X-ray procedure makes it possible to detect even the smallest, non-palpable changes or breast cancer at an early stage. A regular breast screening using mammography is currently considered the most reliable examination to detect breast cancer early on.
Procedure
During mammography, your breasts are pressed together individually between two plastic plates. This can feel a little uncomfortable, but should not hurt much. The pressure is necessary so that the most accurate images of the highest quality can be taken. The examination only takes a few minutes.
Two images are taken at a time, one from the top down and one diagonally from the centre to the side. Thus, two-dimensional black and white images of the breast tissue are produced. Our physicians compare both images and assess the tissue structure and any possible changes in your breasts.
